최경환 성인의 천주신앙과 순교
본 논문은 최경환 성인의 생애를 대상으로 그의 천주신앙과 순교문제를 다루고자 한다. 수리산 공소 회장이었던 최경환 성인은 기해박해 때 평신도 순교자를 대표하는 인물이라 할 수 있다. 최경환의 천주신앙이 보여주는 가장 큰 특징은 하느님 사랑과 이웃 사랑을 결합시키는 신앙생활을 했다는 것이다. 최경환이 보여준 하느님 사랑의 모습은 다음과 같다. 우선 그는 성경 독서와 공부를 열심히 하여 교리 지식에 해박했고 강론에도 뛰어났다. 또한 《칠극》수련을 통해 자신의 단점을 극복하고 모범적인 신앙생활을 보임으로써 많은 사람을 감동시켰다. 둘째 그의 가문이 오랫동안 신앙생활에 냉담하자 최경환이 주도하여 고향인 청양 다락골에서 떠나 서울, 강원도 김성, 경기도 부평, 수리산 등지로 이주함으로써 올바른 신앙생활을 할 수 있었다. 셋째 고향에서 모은 많은 재산이 신앙생활에 장애가 되자 그는 자발적으로 재산을 포기하고 가난한 삶을 선택했다. 대신 노동과 절약으로 시련을 극복하고 신앙심을 지켰다. 최경환의 하느님 사랑은 이웃 사랑과 연결되는 것이다. 그가 보여준 이웃 사랑의 모습은 다음과 같다. 첫째 그는 스스로 자기를 낮추고 다른 사람을 존중하여 항상 교만을 경계하였다. 둘째 그는 무엇보다 가족을 중시하고 부모에 대한 효도와 형제간의 우애를 실천하였다. 셋째 그는 항상 이웃과 가족들 사이에서 화목했고 자식들에게도 그것을 강조했다. 넷째 신분의 차별을 넘어 이웃을 평등하게 대했다. 이 평등사상은 그 아버지에게 영향을 받은 것이며 다시 최경환의 아들 최양업 신부에게도 전승되었다. 다섯째 최경환은 자신이 가난함에도 불구하고 자선을 많이 베풀었다. 순교자의 시신을 매장하고 같이 잡혀간 신자들에게 용기를 불어넣은 것 역시 사랑의 실천이었다. 최경환은 수리산에 정착한 뒤 얼마 후에 기해박해가 일어나자 공소회장이자 신학생의 부친으로서 모범을 보이기 위해 순교를 결심하고 준비하였다. 또한 당시 널리 퍼져 있던 배교의 흐름에 선교사들이 고심하고 대책을 강구할 때 최경환은 앞장서서 순교자의 시신을 매장함으로써 순교자를 공경하는 모습을 보였고 그 자신도 배교의 유혹을 극복하고 순교하였다. 그의 순교는 배교의 흐름을 거스르는 중요한 계기가 되었고, 많은 신자에게 순교가 신앙 보존과 천주교 확산에 큰 의미가 있음을 일깨워 주었다.
St. Choi Gyeong-hwan’s Catholicism and Martyrdom
kong-so Catechista of Surisan, St. Choi Gyeong-hwan is a figure who represents a martyr of lay believers during the Catholic Persecution. The biggest character St. Choi Gyeong-hwan’s Catholicism shows is a religious life connecting the God’s love and neighborly love. The God’s love Choi Gyeong-hwan showed is as follows. First, he reads the Bible and studies hard, and he is excellent in doctrinal knowledge and lectures. In addition, he overcame his weak points through 《The Seven Victories》, and showed an exemplary religious life which impressed many people. Second, he left his hometown Darakgol in Cheongyang due to his family’s unreligious life and moved to Seoul, Kimseong in Gwangwon-do, Bupyeong in Gyeonggi-do, and Surisan to live a sound religious life. Third, his richness hindered his religious life, so he gave up it by himself and chose a poor life. He went through ordeals through labor and saving and kept his piety. Choi Gyeong-hwan’s love for the God is connected to neighborly love. His neighborly love is as follows. First, he condescended to respect others and beware of arrogance. Second, he respected family and did his duty by his parents and got along with his brothers. Third, he harmonized his family and neighbors, and he emphasized it to his children. Fourth, he treated neighbors fairly. This equality is affected by his father, and it is handed down to his son the Father Choi Yang-eup. Fifth, Choi Gyeong-hwan was also poor, but he helped the poor a lot. Burying pilgrims and encouraging the believers captured along with him is also the practice of love. Choi Gyeong-hwan settled Surisan, and when the Catholic Persecution occurred, he decided and prepared for martyrdom to set an example as a kong-so Catechist and a father of theological students. In addition, when missionaries seek for countermeasures for the flow of widely spread apostasy, he took initiative to bury pilgrims’ dead bodies and showed his respectful mind, and he also overcame allurement of apostasy and died a martyr. His martyrdom became an important opportunity to go against the flow of apostasy, and make many believers aware of the deep meaning of martyrdom for preservation of the faith and expansion of Roman Catholicism.
