Roman Catholic Communities in Jinjam and Surrounding Areas during the Latter Half of the Joseon Dynasty

LEE SEOK WON

Although Jinjam Prefecture was a small administrative unit during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), the populace faced economic difficulties because the region had a large population of yangban (aristocrats), who did not pay taxes. Surrounded by mountains, Jinjam was on the boundary of Chungcheong Province and Jeolla Province and was bordered by Gongju City to the north, Jinsan County to the southeast, and Yeonsan Prefecture to the southwest. Such historical and geographical backgrounds served as an impetus for the transmission of Catholicism to the masses and mountainous borderlands rather than to the upper classes and central areas. With the Jinsan Incident (where a family of believers abolished Confucian ancestor worship and led to government persecution) of 1791 as the occasion, Catholic communities came to be formed in Jinsan, Geumsan County, Gosan Prefecture, and Yeonsan. With Thomas Gim Yu-san’s residence in the Sanmak-dong neighborhood in Jinjam, Catholicism came to be transmitted to Jinjam during the latter half of the 1790s. There is no extant record on the Catholic faith in the region until one confirming the residence of a group of believers in the Jang’andong neighborhood in Jinjam from before 1836. In particular, Han Jaegwon served as the head of the gongso (an assembly center without a priest) in Jinjam from the latter half of the 1840s to the first half of the 1850s. During the government’s persecution of Catholics in 1866, Paul Yi (first name unknown), Joseph Gang Sun-ji, Peter Jeon Ja-yeon, and Stanislaus Gim (first name unknown), all residents of Baranggol and Apjae Villages in Jinjam, were taken to and martyred in Gongju. Likewise, in 1878, Jang Jeong-seon, a resident of Oriul Village in Jinjam, was arrested together with believers from other areas and martyred in Seoul. According to materials, believers in Jinjam lived in what are now the Jang’an-dong and O-dong neighborhoods in the Seo-gu ward of Daejeon City, concentrated in mountainous villages on the boundary of Jinsan to the east and Yeonsan to the west. This was because mountainous borderlands, from which relocation to neighboring areas was easy and where one could avoid public attention, were appropriate for Catholics. Most believers who relocated to Jinjam had connections to Chungcheong Province. They relocated to mountainous inland areas in order to avoid governmental persecutions of Catholics in the Naepo region (an unofficial region in Chungcheong Province encompassing present-day Yesan County, Dangjin City, Seosan City, and Hongseong County) and to engage in religious practices more faithfully. On the contrary, as for cases of relocation from Jinjam to other regions, believers moved to mountainous areas in what is now northern Jeonju Soyang township(now northern Wanju County in North Jeolla Province). It was because believers who settled in mountainous villages moved along mountain routes even when relocating elsewhere and followed others’ movement routes.
