근현대 진잠의 천주교
이 글은 충청남도와 대전시의 접경에 위치한 근현대 진잠지역의 천주교에 관한 연구이다. 조선 후기 박해 속에서 성장한 진잠의 천주교는 1876년 강화도조약 이후 새로운 전기를 맞이하였다. 개항으로 말미암아 정부 주도의 박해는 더 이상 진행되지 않았다. 그러나 지방에 위치한 진잠지역의 박해는 여전하여 1900년에는 진잠의 지방 관리들과 양반들이 주민들을 선동하여 천주교 신자들을 박해하였으며, 1903년에는 도적떼의 습격을 받아 신자들이 큰 피해를 입었다. 이런 가운데에도 신자들은 진잠지역에 뿌리를 내려 되재본당에 속한 공소를 형성하였다. 진잠지역은 과거에는 충청도와 전라도의 접경에 위치했고, 행정구역의 변경에 따라 현대에 이르러서는 대전시와 충청도의 접경에 위치하게 되었다. 이 과정에서 진잠지역은 천주교의 관할 구역 안에서도 여러 차례 변동을 겪었다. 1920년까지는 되재본당의 관할이었고, 1921년 논산본당이 설립되자 그 관할에 속하게 되었고, 일제강점기에서 벗어난 해방 후에는 대전본당의 관할이 되었다. 6.25전쟁 후 신자들이 증가하자 1950년대 후반에는 진잠지역의 중심에 진잠공소가 생겨났다. 이 공소는 대전시의 발전과 함께 점차 성장하여 2001년에 ‘진잠본당’으로 승격하였다. 진잠본당은 조선시대부터 진잠지역에 이어져 온 신앙 역사를 계승하기 위해 1866년에 순교한 한재권(요셉)과 정원지(베드로) 성인을 본당의 주보로 정하였다. 진잠에서 태어난 두 순교자는 1984년 성인품에 오른 분들로 진잠의 천주교 역사를 대표할 만한 인물이다. 이를 통해 진잠본당은 조선시대부터 현재로 이어지는 신앙의 역사를 상징하는 공동체로서 과거와 단절 없이 신앙 여정을 계속하고 있다.
Modern Catholicism of Jinjam
This is a study on modern Catholicism in the Jinjam area located on the border of Chungcheongnam-do and Daejeon. Catholicism of Jinjam that developed through persecution during the Late Joseon Dynasty had a turning point after the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1876. With the opening of the nation to foreign powers, governmentled persecution ceased. However, persecution in the Jinjam area that was located remotely continued. In 1900, the local administrators and aristocrats of Jinjam incited the people to persecute Catholic believers and in 1903, thieves attacked causing huge damages to the Catholics. Amidst such circumstances, Catholics took root in the Jinjam area and formed a station under the Doejae Parish. Jinjam was located on the border of Chungcheong-do and Jeollado in the past, and due to changes in administrative regions, it became located on the border of Daejeon and Chungcheongnam-do in modern times. Through this process, the Jinjam area experienced changes several times even within the administrative region of the Catholic church. Up until 1920, it was under the jurisdiction of the Doejae Parish and when the Nonsan Parish was established in 1921, it was under its jurisdiction. After the Japanese Occupation and once Korea gained independence, it fell under the jurisdiction of the Daejeon Parish. The number of Catholics grew after the Korean War and in the late 1950s, the Jinjam Station was formed in the Jinjam region. This station gradually grew with the development of Daejeon City and in 2001, it was promoted to Jinjam Parish. In order to continue the history of faith that continued since the Joseon Dynasty in Jinjam, the Jinjam Parish designated Saint Han Jae-gwon (Joseph) and Jung Won-ji (Peter) who were martyred in 1866 as the patron saints of the parish. These two martyrs who were born in Jinjam were given sainthood in 1984 and they represent the history of the Catholic church in Jinjam. Through this, the Jinjam Parish continued its journey of faith without interruption since the past as a community that symbolizes the history of faith that continued from the Joseon Dynasty to this day.
