This study is designed to elucidate the process of influx of Christian faith into East Asia and its Sinicization through translation by analyzing the first Chinese catechism, Tian zhu sheng jiao shi lu (天主聖敎實錄) composed by Michele Ruggieri (羅明堅 1543~1607) with special attention to relations between the Latin text and its Chinese translations as to their structures, contents, and terminology. First, this study shows that the Latin text Vera et Brevis Divinarum Rerum Expositio demonstrates cultural interactions between Christianity and East Asian culture. Ruggieri did not choose to translate one of the catechetical writings commonly used in Western Christianity, but to create a new catechism in the context of Chinese mission. This Latin catechism consists of questions of a Chinese scholar and answers of a Christian priest which displays a different type from the conventional one in which a teacher or a clergy asks and a disciple or a believer answers. Ruggieri fairly describes the five constant virtues(五常), filial piety and brotherly love(孝悌), and fatalism deeply rooted into Chinese culture and introduces some elementary teachings of Buddhism such as four types of birth and six realms of existence(四生六道) and the eternal cycle of birth, death, and rebirth(輪廻). In particular, Ruggieri reveals a positive appreciation of Confucian teachings, making it possible to conjecture that Matteo Ricci succeeded his pro-Confucian attitude. Ruggieri, however, clothed Buddhist monk’s robe, presented himself as a Buddhist monk in his mission work as well as extensively utilized Buddhist concepts and words such as monk(僧), India(天竺), temple(寺), renouncing the world(出家) in his first Chinese translation of the Latin text. The 1584 edition of Xin bian Xizhu guo tian zhu shi lu (新編西竺國天主實錄), changing the structure of its Latin text, puts teachings on baptism instead of the Last Judgment and the realms of souls after death, thereby giving an impression that all other doctrines culminate in an exhortation to be baptized. This Chinese catechism presents basic tenets of Christian teachings concerning verification of God’s existence and immortality of human souls, divine attributes, Hexameron, Eschatology and the Last Judgement, dwellings of souls after death, Christ’s person, virgin birth, passion, death, resurrection and ascension, Ten commandments, evangelical consilia and baptism. Above all, this work introduces the word Tian zhu to designate the one God (Deus) and renders into Chinese Aristotle’s theory of the celestial spheres, Tullian sentences, and the medieval legend of Augustine’s encounter with a boy on the beach. The revised and expanded edition entitled Tian zhu sheng jiao shi lu(天主聖敎實錄) replaces Buddhist and Taoist terminology in the first edition, and updates essential terms and words related to Christian faith, using 聖人(saint), 靈魂(soul), 天神(angel), 天堂(heaven), 每瑟(Moses), 耶(Jesus). Furthermore, it inserts a new chapter on the Trinity (Chapter 7 天主聖性), completes the realms of souls after death by adding the realm of the old Testament saints(古時聖人居), and substitutes the Apostles’ Creed for Ruggieri’s own rule of faith. All these suggest that the transition from Xin bian Xizhu guo tian zhu shi lu to Tian zhu sheng jiao shi lu does not just consist in revising Buddhist and Taoist expressions, but in making it a comprehensive catechism dealing with Trinity, Apostles’ Creed, Ten Commandments, and baptism to teach Chinese Christians fundamental doctrines in deeper levels. This study corroborates that extensive investigation of missionary and catechetical works including Tian zhu sheng jiao shi lu will reveal the process and substance of East-West cultural interactions.
