번수의(樊守義)의 『신견록』(身見錄) - 최초의 한문(漢文) 유럽여행기
오래전부터 중국 의례 논쟁에 관심을 가져온 필자는 중국 의례 논쟁을 신학과 전통의 100년 다툼으로 정의하고 있는데, 기존의 많은 부분의 자 료들은 서양의 측면에서 바라보는 의례 논쟁이거나 중국 내지에서 있었던 논쟁이 대부분이었다. 즉 신학에 대한 전통의 대응만을 언급하고 있는 것 이 주류였고, 대부분 자료 역시 서구 쪽의 시각으로 중국 의례 논쟁을 다 루는 것이었다. 그렇다면 중국 측 특히 강희제가 본 의례 논쟁은 과연 어떤 것이었을까에 관심을 갖게 되었고, 그러한 관심의 촉발에서 특히 강희제의 중국 의례 논쟁 대한 관심과 해결 노력에 대해 살펴보던 중 『신견록』(身 見錄)을 보게 되었다. 번수의가 작성한 이 『신견록』 의 가장 큰 의의는 아마도 중국 최초 중 국인에 의해 한문으로 작성된 유럽 여행기라는 것이다. 이전에는 중국을 서양에 소개한 글은 있었으나, 중국인의 눈에 비친 서양을 한문으로 기록 한 서적은 없었기 때문이었다. 그러나 『신견록』 전체를 번역하여 그 내용 을 살펴본 바로는 여행기로서는 나름대로 큰 의의를 지니고 있다. 중국 최 초의 유럽 견문록인 이 『신견록』은 이홍장(李鴻章)이 청 황제의 특사로 유 럽을 방문하고 돌아와 쓴 『이부상역빙구미기』(李傅相歷聘歐美記) 보다도 200년이나 앞선 글이므로 학계에서 사료로서의 가치를 다시 평가받아야 할 것이다. 둘째로는 『신견록』의 저자인 번수의에 대한 내용이다. 번수의의 고향 인 강주에서 천주교 신자가 차지하는 비율이 13.6%나 되었다는 것에 놀라 지 않을 수 없었다. 이러한 상황에서는 번수의가 강주의 선교사인 프로바 나 신부의 복사를 담당했다는 것은 놀라운 일이 아니었다. 셋째로는 번수의가 사회적 지위에 대한 의의이다. 프로바나를 따라 북 경에 들어와서는 천문생(天文生, 별자리를 관찰하는 요원, 청나라 때의 관 직명)으로 근무했었다는 것은 아주 중요한 의미를 지닌다고 할 수 있다. 넷째로는 동아시아에서 유럽으로 가는 해로를 명확하게 알려주고 있다 는 것이다. 이 『신견록』에서 번수의는 향신료의 산지인 서남아시아를 어 떤 루트로 통과하여 지나갔는지에 대해서도 자세하게 언급이 되어 있고, 특히 아프리카 희망봉을 돌아 브라질의 바이아 즉 현재의 살바도르를 거쳐 포르투갈의 리스본으로 들어갔다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 해류 와 바람 방향의 영향으로 희망봉에서 아프리카 대륙의 서부 해안을 따라 거슬러 올라갈 수 없었음을 확인할 수 있었고, 바이아의 중요성도 재확인 할 수 있었다. 다섯째로는 선진 유럽 문물에 대한 상세한 설명으로 당시 중국인에게 는 큰 자극이 되었고, 세계관의 변화를 가져오는 계기가 되었다고 할 수 있 다. 여섯째로는 많은 연구자에게 도움을 주고자, 『신견록』 전문을 완역(전 부 번역)하여 논문에 실었다. 이상으로 본 논문은 이전에 밝히지 못했던 부분을 밝히고 있다는데 그 의의를 지니고 있으며, 앞으로 이를 바탕으로 좀 더 많은 부분의 사실을 밝 혀내는데 좋은 자료로 활용될 것이다.
Fan Shouyi(樊守義)’s Shenjian-lu(『身見錄』) - The first record of travel to Europe written in Classical Chinese(漢文) -
The present writer, who has been interested in the Chinese ritual debate since long before, has defined the Chinese ritual dispute as a 100-year struggle between theology and tradition while many of existing resources are mostly ritual disputes viewed from the Western side, or disputes that took place in China. In other words,most only mention traditional responses to theology, and deal with the Chinese debate from the Western perspective. If so, I became interested in what kind of ritual debate the Chinese side of view, and while looking at Emperor Kangxi’s efforts to resolve the Chinese ritual debate, I came across Louis Fan’s 『身見錄』(Shenjian-lu). The greatest significance of this Shenjian-lu written by Fan Shouyi is that it is perhaps the first Chinese travel record to be written in Classical Chinese by Chinese in Europe. Previously, there were articles that introduced China to the West, but there were no such books that recorded the West in Chinese characters. However, the translation of the entire Shenjian-lu and examining its contents has great significance in its own way as a record of travel. This is China's first Europe travelogue, and it is even 200 years earlier than Li Hongzhang's (李鴻章), who visited Europe as a special envoy of the Qing emperor. so this value should be re-evaluated. Secondary, it is about Fan Shouyi, the author of Shenjian-lu. I couldn’t help but be surprised that the proportion of Catholics in Jiangzhou(絳州), the hometown of Fan, was 13.6%. Under this circumstances, it was not surprising that Fan was in charge of copying the missionary of Jiangzhou, Father Provana. Third, the meaning of Fan’s social status. It means a lot that he followed Provana in Beijing astronomy student (天文生, an agent who observes the constellations, an official title during the Qing Dynasty) Fourth, it clearly indicates the sea route from East Asia to Europe. in this Shenjian-lu, it is also mentioned in detail how he passed through SouthWest Asia, a place where spices are produced. In particular, he went around the Cape of Good Hope in Africa and went through Bahia in Brazil, that is, Salvador in present day, to Lisbon, Portugal. This confirmed that it could not be traced from the Cape of Good Hope along the western coast of the African continent due to the influence of ocean currents and wind direction, and reaffirmed the importance of Bahia. Fifth, a detailed explanation of European culture was a great stimulus for the Chinese at the time, and it was an opportunity for China to change the way it views the world. Sixth, In order to help many researchers, the full text of Shenjian-lu was fully translated and published in the thesis. As mentioned above, this thesis has its significance in that it reveals a previously undisclosed part, and it will be used as good material to uncover more facts based on this in the future.
